Forest Lawn under boil water notice

·2 min read

Northern Health has issued a boil water notice for the Forest Lawn trailer park after the discovery of higher than acceptable manganese levels in its drinking water system.

An Oct. 28 inspection noted the cistern used to store water for the park is not being regularly cleaned and sanitized.

Roughly 150 people live in the park, and residents contacted Alaska Highway News earlier this week, complaining of intermittent water service and undrinkable water for the past two weeks.

According to inspection notes, no maintenance or upkeep has been done to the water system, nor is there a qualified water operator on site. Training will be provided to the park owner and property manager.

“The water system operator has been given clear timelines for completing the corrective actions, starting with the requirement to repair or replace any malfunctioning equipment immediately, to prevent further interruptions to water service,” said Northern Health spokesperson Eryn Collins by email.

An Aug. 14 inspection flagged the water quality issues, but stated them to be low risk.

Water repairs and compliance are expected immediately, with written long-term and short-term plans water system improvement plans to be submitted to Northern Health by the owner in November, said Collins.

The boil water notice will remain in place until issues with the water system are addressed.

“Northern Health will continue to work with the operator to ensure a safe and adequate supply is re-established as soon as possible,” wrote Collins.

By 2021, the park owner will also be required to have an assessment done on the system by a qualified water system professional, and apply for a construction permit for upgrades and changes.

Upgrades must be approved by Northern Health’s Public Health Engineer before construction can begin.

The property manager could not be immediately reached for comment.
