Former Center Middle School student alleges school security officer attacked her in 2022: Lawsuit
A Kansas City student and her mother filed a lawsuit against the Center School District earlier this month, alleging that a school security officer assaulted and injured the student at a CSD middle school in 2022.
The student, referred to in court documents as K.M., alleges that Jarvis L. Jones, a 54-year-old Grandview resident, attacked her in a hallway at Center Middle School, 326 E 103rd St., on Oct. 20, 2022, as she walked down the hall past two fighting students.
The lawsuit was filed Oct. 4, 2025 in Jackson County Court. According to the lawsuit, Jones followed K.M., who was 13 at the time of the alleged assault, into the hallway during a passing period as she joined a crowd watching the fight. K.M. alleges that Jones, without provocation, pushed her across the hallway and slammed her into a bank of metal lockers on the other side.
When the student fell to the ground, she alleges that Jones forcibly lifted her up, slammed her back into the lockers and then pinned her to the ground. K.M. further alleges that several CMS teachers and staff members saw the whole incident and told Jones to stop, without effect.
Teachers were eventually able to get Jones to voluntarily step away from K.M., according to the lawsuit. However, the student alleges that she injured her head during Jones’ assault, cutting open her forehead and experiencing “a temporary alteration of consciousness.”
Center School District was unavailable Wednesday to comment on the pending litigation.
During a doctors’ appointment related to the attack on Oct. 31, a medical provider advised the student not to return to school for a week while she recovered, the lawsuit reads.
K.M. “was scared to return to school for fear of having contact with Jones,” the lawsuit reads. After the school year ended, she transferred into a virtual program.
K.M. was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after the alleged attack, according to the lawsuit. The student also reported that she has experienced head, chest, shoulder and back pain, nausea, trouble sleeping and cognitive decline as a result of the alleged attack, according to the lawsuit.
K.M. and her mother are bringing one count of negligence and one count of battery against both Jones and Center School District. The lawsuit questions the use of physical force against K.M. and states that the attack was not provoked.
The pair have demanded a jury trial and will next appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 30 for a case management conference.
