Former CFL star running back named next chancellor at University of Calgary

CALGARY — A former football player has been named the new chancellor-elect of the University of Calgary.

CFL Hall of Fame running back Jon Cornish spent nine years with the Calgary Stampeders, earning numerous awards, including two Grey Cup championships.

He will replace Deborah Yedlin, a former journalist and president of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

Cornish was also named a three-time Top Canadian Player, Most Outstanding Player and was the recipient of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s Top Athlete before retiring from football in 2015 to work as an investment adviser.

His four-year term begins July 1.

Cornish has been recognized for his social activism and is founder and president of the Calgary Black Chambers, established to support members of racialized communities.
