Former Hurricane star Devin Hester rips Jay Cutler’s leadership skills
Florida native and former NFL star Devin Hester, who played at the University of Miami, blasted former teammate Jay Cutler’s leadership.
The two played together for the Chicago Bears, and Hester made his comments on Cutler’s leadership during an episode of Bleacher Report’s “Untold Stories.”
Talking to host Master Tesfatsion while shooting a game of pool, Hester was asked why he wasn’t used more as a wide receiver during his career, which was highlighted with his scintillating return skills.
“So my third year, that’s when I re-did a new contract and became the No. 1 receiver,” Hester said. “That’s the same year we brought in Jay Cutler. He’s not really a sociable guy. He’s not a talker, you know what I mean? He picks one or two guys, and he just leeches on ‘em and separates himself from everybody.”
“As a quarterback, like, I’d tell him to his face today that, to me, my years in the NFL — I played 11 years — he’s the best quarterback when it comes to accuracy, power, knowledge of the game. The best quarterback, hands down, I’ve ever played with. Now when it comes to leadership, the worst.”
Hester continued with, “He don’t know how to communicate. He don’t know how to get his teammates involved.”
Hester also recounted Cutler, who last played for the Dolphins before retiring from the NFL, and Brandon Marshall’s relationship. The two played together with the Denver Broncos and then the Bears.
Hester remembered one instance at practice where Marshall was yelling at Cutler, which led to Hester to make a speculative bet with Julius Peppers on how many passes Cutler would throw to Marshall during the practice.
Hester said 21 straight passes went Marshall’s way, which led to the betting between Hester and Peppers to stop.
