Former Ottawa teacher facing more sexual assault charges

A Morrisburg, Ont., man is facing more charges of sexual assault and charges of sexual exploitation and gross indecency related to incidents between 1973 and 1992 when he was a teacher in Ottawa.

Police in June charged the 72-year-old man with sexual assault after allegations he touched one of his male students inappropriately in the 1980s.

Since that time four more people have come forward with incidents that allegedly occurred while the accused was teaching.

As a result, the man now faces two more charges of sexual assault, four charges of gross indecency and one charge of sexual exploitation.

He is expected to make his next court appearance on Aug. 22.

"The Ottawa police will respect a victim's wishes to pursue or not pursue the matter before the courts," said Staff Sgt. Angela McDade in a statement.

"The reporting of these incidents by victims to police is key for investigators to identify suspects and determine crime trends."
