Former premier Lougheed's motorcade arrives in Calgary

Lougheed lies in state at the Alberta Legislature.

The hearse carrying the body of former Alberta premier Peter Lougheed arrived in Calgary Tuesday evening after more than 1,000 people paid their respects.

At 6 p.m. MT, Mounties carried his coffin out of the Alberta legislature in Edmonton where he had been lying in state since Monday.

The motorcade passed by two landmarks that were special to Lougheed — Rutherford House and Knox-Metropolitan United Church, before heading to Calgary. Lougheed stayed at Rutherford House while he was attending the University of Alberta and he and his wife, Jeanne, were married at the church.

The coffin arrived at a southwest Calgary funeral home at about 9:30 p.m MT. The Alberta government is holding a state memorial to honour Lougheed Friday afternoon at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. CBC.ca will have live coverage of the event.

Over the past two days many Albertans offered tributes to Lougheed. Hundreds made their way through the legislature Tuesday and on Monday more than 1,000 people lined up to offer condolences to his family.

Lougheed, who was premier from 1971 to 1985, died last week at the age of 84.

The family is planning to hold a private funeral Thursday.
