Fort McMurray man dies in crash on Highway 63

A Fort McMurray man is dead and a 12-year-old boy is in hospital after a weekend crash on Highway 63.

The three-vehicle crash happened at about 9:50 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of highways 63 and 18 east of Thorhild.

The tractor-trailer unit swung into eastbound traffic and struck a car that was stopped waiting to cross the highway.

The 47-year-old man driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. His 12-year-old passenger, also from Fort McMurray, was transported by ground ambulance with serious injuries to an Edmonton hospital. He remains in the hospital in stable condition.

The 40-year-old driver of the car was treated at the scene for minor injuries. His 41-year-old passenger was transported by ground ambulance to an Edmonton Hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

The 24-year-old tractor-trailer driver was not injured.

The collision remains under investigation.
