It's time to hunt for some scary tricks and treats in Fortnite.

On Wednesday, the hit online game launched its annual Fortnitemares, a special Halloween event during which players earn some unique, frightful items and skins for a two-week period.

This year, Fortnitemares runs from Oct. 21 to Nov. 3. Along with special skins and emotes, players will access a new wave of weapons and gear to help customize their avatars.

Here's what you should know about 2020 Fortnitemares:

'Fortnitemares' 2020: What's different?

The theme this year is Midas' Revenge, starring the boss Shadow Midas. The event will feature Shadows, ghost-like lifeforms players transform into after they are eliminated in Solo, Duos or Squads modes. From there, players can attempt to vanquish living players and pull off cool tricks like possessing vehicles. Also, the game isn't over when you get eliminated. You can keep playing, hunt and attack the remaining living players and survive off their loot – even go on to win a Nightmare Royale as a shadow. To score a Victory Royale in this version, you've got to eliminate all other living players and the shadows.

On Halloween night, the game will also host an "Afterlife Party" headlined by J Balvin.

What kind of gear is available?

Players can equip different Halloween-themed weapons including the Pumpkin Rocket Launcher and a Fiend Hunter Crossbow. Players can also fly on witches' brooms, similar to the Silver Surfer's surfboard. Players can use their V Bucks to get a neon Party Trooper outfit, inspired by the game's popular Skull Trooper skin. There's also a special J Balvin style Party Trooper variant of the skin.

What about the 'Fortnitemares' challenges?

GamesRadar has a solid breakdown of all the challenges players can complete and where to find them, including Become a Shadow and Eat Candy. The challenges will net lots of experience points (XP) and other Fortnitemares items. Some challenges are available now while others will unlock with the next couple days, reports GamesRadar.
