Four people arrested after standoff in Saint John's east side

Police say four people have been arrested after a standoff lasting two and a half hours on Saint John's east side.

According to a Saint John Police Force press release Thursday, officers responded at 1 p.m. after a report that “armed persons entered a residence” on Alma Street near Park Avenue in Saint John East.

Police said the residence was contained and asked residents to shelter in place, as well as asking the public to avoid the area.

At about 2:30 p.m., cars blocked off Park Avenue and an officer with a police dog could be seen outside a police vehicle parked in a driveway.

At just after 3:45 p.m., police announced they had arrested four people at the residence and the area was considered safe and the shelter-in-place and traffic blocks were lifted.

"The Saint John Police would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation," police wrote in the release.

Police say the major crimes unit continues to investigate.

In the release, police said the incident did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready report.

Police ask anyone with information to call 1-506-648-3333, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
