Fredericton aims to have new splash pad at Wilmot Park open in August

The new splash pad at Fredericton's Wilmot Park is expected to be open by mid- to late-August, according to city officials.

"That's what we're shooting for," said Michelle Horncastle, the manager of the city's recreation and social facilitation division.

But she noted the completion of work on the splash pad will be dependent on the weather

"If at all possible, we'd like to have the facility open at the end of the summer for residents to try — even if it's just for a short period of time," she said.

"We're very excited."

The overhaul of Wilmot Park is expected to cost $850,000.

Crews have been working on the site for weeks.

The concrete surface is now poured, large multi-coloured posts that will support two large shade shelters have been installed and new signage showing a detailed rendition of the facility has been posted.

Larger, more amenities

The site is about one-and-a-half times larger than the previous facility, with additional amenities, based on the public consultation held in 2014-15, such as the shade shelters, as well as extra seating and a unisex washroom that can be used for changing, she said.

It is also barrier-free with zero-grade entry throughout, making it accessible to everyone.

"We are getting quite a few calls, we're getting quite a few people stopping by," said Horncastle.

"There is a gentleman that walks by with his dog every morning and he does a little update to his grandchildren every day on how the project is proceeding, so there is a lot of interest."

The splash pad will be operational from 10 a.m. until dusk.

The site will remain open outside those hours, but the water won't be available, Horncastle said.
