Some Fredericton seniors' home residents can go back Saturday

Some residents return to Evelyn Grove Manor after evacuation

The first wave of seniors who were displaced from their residence on Thursday afternoon will be allowed to return Saturday.

More than 80 people were removed from Evelyn Grove Manor in Fredericton after a water pipe burst in the basement sometime after 3 p.m..

Staff then had to cut the power as a precaution, disabling air conditioners, medical equipment and elevators.

An electrical unit was damaged because of the burst pipe, with crews remaining on site until Friday to repair it. The Department of Social Development hoped to have the unit fixed by Friday evening.

Any residents who live on the first floor, or who are mobile enough to use the stairs to get to their homes will be included in the first group allowed back in.

Any residents who cannot climb stairs to the higher floors will be remain at the accommodations that were arranged for them Thursday evening, because the elevator is still out of order.

There is no timeline for when the other residents can move back in.
