Fredericton's Westmorland Street Bridge reduced to 1 lane for washing

Fredericton's Westmorland Street Bridge is down to one lane Monday and Tuesday for washing as part of its routine maintenance, says the Department of Transportation.

The work is being conducted between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days to avoid peak travel periods and minimize any traffic disruptions, said spokeswoman Sarah Bustard.

Crews are sweeping the bridge to remove winter sand and salt and then washing the structure with water, said Bustard.

Salt can be harsh on the bridge, she explained.

Drains will also be washed to prevent any materials from collecting, she said.

Similar work was completed on the Princess Margaret Bridge last week.

"The department thanks the travelling public for their patience and reminds motorists to drive safely in construction zones," she said.

The Regent Street overpass construction project continues and is scheduled to be complete by Aug. 31.
