Free Wi-Fi for downtown Charlottetown through pilot project

A new startup will soon offer free Wi-Fi in the bulk of downtown Charlottetown.

Starting mid-August, Wicked Eh Wireless is installing routers that will let people log on anywhere from the waterfront to Euston Street.

Wi-Fi is free for the first hour.

Mike Duffy, the city's deputy mayor, says the pilot project is a great thing for the downtown area.

"For tourists and for residents also, it would make your experience in the Charlottetown area, you know, much more enjoyable and much more accessible and you get more out of the attractions and the services the city has to offer," said Duffy.

The company will make money through advertising and by charging for premium use, such as streaming video. Users will have to log on again after one hour.

Wicked Eh plans to offer the service for about nine months and will then proceed based on the pilot project's success.
