Freezing rain prompts school closures north of Montreal

Icy temperatures lead to treacherous road conditions across Quebec after winter storm

A freezing rain warning is still in effect for Montreal and the surrounding areas this morning.

Environment Canada expects the greater Montreal area and parts of the Eastern Townships, Laurentians and Lanaudière regions to see between two to 10 millimetres of freezing rain before the temperatures warm up later in the day.

Five schools in the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board are closed due to the weather:

- Joliette Elementary School.

- Joliette High School.

- Rawdon Elementary School.

- Arundel Elementary School.

- Ste-Agathe Academy.

The weather conditions also led to a number of collisions on roads in and around Montreal overnight.

The temperature is expected to rise to 6 C by late Tuesday afternoon.

The system bringing the freezing rain is heading east, and is expected to reach New Brunswick by Tuesday night.
