French carnival bonfire explosion injures at least 18

At least 18 people were hurt when a bonfire exploded at the annual spring carnival in the Parisian suburb of Villepinte on Saturday, French media have reported.

The explosion occurred around 5:30 p.m., seconds after a pile of wood was ignited, sending debris flying at the Yellow Carnaval, northeast of the French capital.

Five of the injured are in serious condition.

Fire officials say they believe the explosion may have happened because of the mishandling of fuel used to light the fire.
