Frost warning puts gardeners on alert across GTA

Gardeners beware.

The calendar may say late May, but weather officials say there's a real risk of frost overnight for much of southern Ontario including the GTA.

"Widespread frost is expected," Environment Canada said in a severe weather warning issued Friday.

Ground temperatures are expected to be at — or even below — freezing overnight and into early Saturday, the weather agency said.

"Overnight temperatures across the Golden Horseshoe will be between -1 and 2 C," CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland said.

"By the lake the risk of frost is minimal, away from the lake there's a risk," Scotland said.

Fruit crops, vegetables, plants and trees could all be at risk, and the agency urges people to take preventative measures.

"It's best to err on the side of caution and cover up that tender vegetation. Or if you haven't planted yet, bring those potted plant indoors overnight," Scotland said, adding that we will see a return to seasonal temperatures of around 20 C by Saturday afternoon.
