Frozen Director Discusses Responsibility Of Sequel

‘Frozen’s’ record breaking haul of $1.2 billion at the box office back in 2013 means that there is a lot of responsibility on its sequel’s shoulders to not only match this total but be just as enchanting as its original.

During a recent discussion with MTV, co-director Chris Buck admitted that he is fully aware of the responsibility that will come hand in hand with making a follow-up to the monstrous hit, and they’re going to address that in the sequel.

“I think we’re very aware of what is happening in society,” said Buck, who is currently writing ‘Frozen 2’ with the original’s writer and co-director Jennifer Lee. “I don’t think any of us take [them] lightly, even though they can be very funny and entertaining the messages that our movies have and the influences they can hove on young people.”

Buck continued, “When the kids [watch] them, they watch them over and over again, and if we don’t have a decent message in there, I think we’ve missed an opportunity.”

But was there any update on what ‘Frozen 2’ might actually revolve around?

Only a smidge; as Buck declared that, much like its predecessor, ‘Frozen 2’ is going to have Kristen Bell’s Anna and Idina Menzel’s Elsa front and centre.

“We have two very strong female leads in ‘Frozen’,” explained Buck. “We will keep that going in the next one. We will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with.”

‘Frozen’ sneakily included several Easter Eggs and allusions to controversial themes for a Disney movie. The song ‘Let It Go’ was seen as a metaphor for coming out, while the character of Oaken was hinted to have a male partner, who he had children with.

‘Frozen’s’ creative team has neither confirmed nor denied these rumours. But Buck’s comments suggest that they’re very aware of the power that they have to try and mould young minds. And it’s a responsibility that he’s not taking lightly.

‘Frozen 2’ is still currently in development, and it’s going to be a few years before we know when it might finally be in cinemas.
