Funeral homes to see tighter regulation

Funeral homes on P.E.I. will soon be governed by more extensive regulations.

The P.E.I. Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association asked the provincial government for the regulations to ensure all funeral directors meet certain qualifications. They'll need at least a high school education, plus a two-year diploma and a 20-month apprenticeship.

Faye Doucette, president of the Funeral Associations of Canada, said the regulations are a step in the right direction, but she'd personally like to see further changes.

"I would like to see people with a psychology background and also with some chemistry or some science because we do need to know that for our embalming theory," said Doucette.

"The big thing is the psychological. I think we need training in dealing with people, in communications and human relations."

The new regulations will be brought in this fall.
