Funnel cloud spotted in Conception Bay South

Photos and videos of an apparent funnel cloud in Conception Bay South appeared on social media Tuesday afternoon.

Some people who shared footage with CBC News first suspected the cloud was, in fact, a tornado.

"When a funnel cloud touches the ground, that's when it becomes a tornado," CBC Meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said.

"In this case it appears it stayed a funnel cloud over land, near Foxtrap and CBS. However pictures and video have since confirmed that it did briefly touch down on the water of Conception Bay, becoming a waterspout. Very rare sights in this neck of the woods, for sure."

Last August, multiple funnel clouds were spotted over parts of the Avalon during a period of torrential rain and hail.
