Gérard Deltell expected to quit CAQ to run for Conservatives

Coalition Avenir Québec MNA Gérard Deltell will announce Tuesday morning that he will quit his party to run for the Conservatives in the upcoming federal election, Radio-Canada has learned.

Deltell will hold a news conference tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in his riding of Chauveau in Quebec City.

He sent out a tweet Monday, saying he will make an announcement at that time about his political future.

Radio-Canada has learned he will run for a seat in the federal riding of Louis-Saint-Laurent.

The seat currently belongs to the NDP.

Deltell has been an MNA for almost seven years. Elected for the first time in 2008, he was re-elected in 2012 and 2014. He also led the merger of the CAQ and the Action démocratique du Québec, and was the last leader of the ADQ.

Deltell's resignation will leave two seats vacant in the Quebec City region — his seat in Chauveau and the Jean-Talon seat of former minister Yves Bolduc, who resigned in February.

Byelections will be announced soon.
