Just prior to the start of this school year, 140 students were registered to attend Gabriola Elementary School. The school will have seven divisions for 2021-22, Kate Russell, GES principal, said.
Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools’s internal projection for GES for this school year is 152 students. Enrolment is finalized Sept. 30 when the school district submits its numbers to the Ministry of Education.
Last year, enrolment as of Sept. 30, 2020 sat at 139 students. In 2019-20 enrolment was 167. Those numbers do not include students who were enrolled in distributed learning or homeschooled.
Projections for 2021-22 have 195 students across the district enrolled in Island ConnectED, the district’s remote, distributed learning program. At the beginning of June, 735 students were enrolled for the remainder of the school year, down from a peak of 1,360 earlier in the year.
NLPS did not provide preliminary numbers on how many students were enrolled in distributed learning for the upcoming school year.
