A new gallery with a focus on contemporary art is opening in Charlotte

A new art gallery with a focus on contemporary work — particularly that which celebrates diversity, inclusivity, empathy and love — is opening in Charlotte this week.

When it open Saturday, April 1, Lexicon Gallery will showcase the work of painters, sculptors, textile artists and mixed media artists. The gallery sits near Villani’s and Cheat’s Cheesesteak Parlor — on Pecan Avenue, where Plaza Midwood, Chantilly and Elizabeth come together.

Its opening exhibit, “Garden of Earthly Delights,” highlights 13 visual artists and two fashion designers in a modern, whimsical spin on Dutch Renaissance artist Hieronymus Bosh’s The Garden of Earthly Delights triptych. You can see it for free at the gallery Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and it will remain on display through July 1.

Gallery owner Cassandra Alexis Richardson has previously worked at Charlotte galleries including Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art, Anne Neilson Fine Art and Central Piedmont Community College Art Galleries, along with galleries in San Francisco.

“We serve the art-curious, the art addict and the art aficionado,” she said in a news release and on the Lexicon website. “At Lexicon, we ask the question: “Which work of art speaks to you?” And delve into the “Why?” to uncover deeper levels of meaning for works of art in your life.”

“The grand opening ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ exhibition is an homage to our planet, and a reminder of our crucial caretaking responsibilities for the health and well-being of this wondrous world we call home.”
