Gananoque Poker Run organizers get grant

Gananoque council recently approved a community grant to the organizers of the town's Poker Run.

Council approved a grant to Power Boating Canada, in the amount of $5,000.

The 2022 community grant budget is $40,000 ($15,000 is from the casino revenues and $25,000 from the tax levy).

So far, 2022 grant awards total $18,000.

One application was submitted for council's consideration this cycle, it was noted.

Power Boating Canada has applied for $5,000 toward the cost of the 2022 Poker Run. The application notes that the expected fees for the marina are $8,000.

A grant of $10,000 for this event was awarded by TAP (Tourism Advisory Panel). The panel felt that this event is important not just for the tourism business, but also because of the media campaign for the event creating future tourism.

The applicant is a media business, not a typical individual or non-profit group. The event itself has not historically created a profit.

The organizers have indicated that the event meets the criteria of attracting more than 5,000 visitors, which elevates the eligibility to the $10,000 one-time grant level. However, the applicant stated that as many applicants will come forward post-COVID, they would only ask for the $5,000.

It was noted the application also meets the criteria that the community grant is less than 50 per cent of the cost of the event.

Council also agreed to increase the community grant given to the Gananoque and District Humane Society by another $1,500 to offset the cost of tables, chairs and garbage can rental, as well as to help cover the required increase in insurance coverage needed for the upcoming Ambush concert fundraiser.
