Gander mother escapes burning car just in time thanks to Good Samaritan driver

A single mother says the actions of another driver may have saved her life after her car burst into flames in Gander on Tuesday.

Dona Snow was driving by the town square, when she noticed her gas pedal wasn't accelerating the vehicle properly. She managed to pull over on the side of Airport Boulevard, and was calling a tow truck when she saw a man running towards her.

"I heard this guy come running, telling me to get out of the car and that the car was on fire," she told CBC. "I didn't know what was going on. The car was really on fire, it wasn't very good, I freaked out. It was pretty upsetting."

Within minutes, Snow's sedan was engulfed in flames and all she could do was watch her only vehicle burn — and be thankful that the man – Cory Foster – was there at the right time to let her know what was going on.

"It was wonderful that he took the time to do that, not many people would take the time to do that these days," she said.

"It meant a lot to me for him to go out of his way to help me, because I probably wouldn't be here without him."

Only vehicle

Snow said the car was her only vehicle, and she depends on it to get her daughter back and forth to school. With no other real family around to help her out, she's trying to figure out how she will get around now that her sedan is gone.

To make matters worse, she didn't have fire insurance on the vehicle.

"I depend on my car all the time," she said. "I get down a little just thinking about how I'm going to get by without it."

Snow's daughter has started a GoFundMe to try and raise some cash to help out with the cost of her mother's vehicle, but in the meantime there will be no car rides to school until they can save enough.

"She's going to have to start walking to school," said Snow.
