Gardiner Expressway closed until Sunday for maintenance

Pride festivities and construction to make weekend driving difficult

Traffic is heavy on the westbound Lake Shore and other routes out of the city on Saturday as the Gardiner Expressway remains closed for spring maintenance.

The aging thoroughfare is closed from Carlaw Avenue to Highway 427 from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday.

"A full closure of the expressway is needed to ensure safety for the public and for those working at the site," said the city in a news release.

It will reopen just ahead of the Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon, which will close large sections of the downtown core beginning on Sunday morning and going until 3 p.m.

The city recommends drivers use Lake Shore Boulevard, the Queensway, Richmond, King or Queen streets or Evans Avenue as alternative routes during the Gardiner closure.

The maintenance work, among other things, includes:

- chipping loose concrete from ramps and bridges.

- inspections.

- paving.

- pothole repairs.

- sign inspections.

- guardrail repair.
