Gas jumps 4.5 cents, as HST change comes into effect

It's shaping up to be a tough long weekend for drivers in Newfoundland and Labrador, as gasoline prices jump 4.5 cents per litre on Friday.

The hike is the result of an 2 per cent increase to the provincial HST on gas, as well as the scheduled weekly update from the Public Utilities Board.

That means that on the Avalon Peninsula, a litre of regular self serve can cost as much as $1.284. Some retailers, though, charge less to compete for customers.

Labrador South- Lodge Bay/Cartwright region is the most expensive region in the province, where a litre will cost as much as $1.451.

The two-point jump in the HST was one of the controversial measures introduced in April's provincial budget. Premier Dwight Ball had originally cancelled the planned hike soon after winning the provincial election in November, but said he was forced to change his mind because of the government's deteriorating finances.

Other fuels

In addition to the gasoline increase, diesel is also up while furnace oil, stove oil and propane are are all down less than half a cent.

Diesel fuel sold in Newfoundland is up 1.7 cents while in Labrador it is jumping 2.6 cents.

Furnace oil will see a small drop of 0.38 cents, stove oil is down 0.38 cents and propane heating fuel is decreasing by 0.4 cents.
