Gas leak in east end Montreal leaves thousands without power

About 12,000 Hydro-Québec customers were without power most of the day Thursday in Montreal's east end because of a gas leak.

Gaz Métro says a gas line broke late Thursday morning. Crews worked for hours to repair the line, forcing a stretch of Sherbrooke Street East, near Place Versailles shopping centre, to be completely closed to traffic.

Just before 5 p.m., the gas leak was fixed and all roads in the area were reopen, but power still had to be restored.

With no functional traffic lights in the area, police officers remained on site to direct vehicles along Honoré-Beaugrand and Dickson streets.

By early evening, power was restored to all homes and businesses in the area.
