Gas prices expected to drop Friday across Metro Vancouver

If you're planning to fill your gas tank for the long weekend, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Gas prices across Metro Vancouver are expected to take a significant dip on Friday.

Dan McTeague, a petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, which analyses gas prices, said the price drop will be worth lining up for.

"If you can wait until midnight tonight . . . gas prices will drop in Vancouver (and ) Metro Vancouver by four cents a litre," McTeague said Thursday. "This is the first real U-turn we've seen in gas prices in a while."

Right now, gas prices are about $1.36 per litre, and are set to fall to about $1.32 per litre by midnight Friday according to McTeague.

But the price break may be short lived.

"We may see a one-cent increase on Saturday — so the best day to gas up is, in fact, anytime on Friday."

The lower price prices reflect an end to tight supplies of gasoline on the U.S. Pacific Coast, McTeague said, as well as an across-the-board drop in U.S. gasoline markets.

Despite record low prices for oil, the price of gasoline has remained high in both the U.S. and Canada following major interruptions in supply from U.S. refineries earlier this year due to a lengthy steelworker's strike and an explosion at a major refinery in California.
