General Election 2017: How the front pages reacted

Theresa May sent shockwaves through Westminster yesterday when she announced that a General Election would take place on 8 June.

Reactions to the abrupt u-turn ranged from the horrified to the jubilant, with bookies and pollsters predicting a decimation of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party.

Making the announcement from Number 10, the Prime Minister accused her opposition of attempting to jeopardise Britain’s Brexit negotiations.

Mrs May said: ‘We need a general election and we need one now because we have at this moment a one-off chance to get this done while the European Union agrees its negotiating position and before the detailed talks begin.’
