Genesis 4 expands beyond Smash lineup, adds Street Fighter V

Four new games will be coming to Genesis 4, as the event appears to be moving away from its focus on competitive Super Smash Bros.

Genesis 4’s new trailer reveals Street Fighter V, Rivals of Aether, Towerfall Ascension, and Catherine (yes, that puzzle-platform game released by Atlus nearly five years ago.) This will be the first year Genesis hosts non-Smash titles.

“We added non-Smash games because it’s in line with our vision to have the Genesis tournament series be the place for high skill cap competitive games,” Genesis tournament organizer and Panda Global FGC Manager Bassem “Bear” Dahdouh told Yahoo Esports.

Street Fighter V seems like an obvious choice given the Capcom Pro Tour’s popularity. However, Bear said the other games were added with the hope of improving their exposure.

The event will continue host Super Smash Bros. Melee, Wii U, and Smash 64 singles and doubles tournaments.

Players like Alliance’s Adam “Armada” Lindgren, Team Liquid’s Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma, and TSM’s William “Leffen” Hjelte are already registered for Melee. Meanwhile, TSM’s Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios and NRG’s Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada are expected to attend for Smash 4.

Genesis 4 is currently taking nominations for players to included in its Compendium, a crowdfunding platform with stretch goals that includes pot bonuses for tournaments and flying players out to the event.

Last year’s Compendium raised over $43,000, allowing 10 players from around the world to attend Genesis 3.

Genesis 4 will take place on January 20-22 at the San Jose Convention Center. Registration is open and you can find more information at
