Gerry Dee giving away 400 standup comedy tickets to teachers and parents

Comedian and former teacher Gerry Dee is hoping to inject some laughs into the lives of Nova Scotia teachers and families, so he's offering a limited number of free tickets to them for two of his upcoming standup comedy shows.

On Twitter on Monday, the star of CBC-TV's Mr. D offered 100 free tickets for teachers and 100 for parents with kids in the Nova Scotia school system for each of his upcoming shows in Truro and Sydney.

The offer comes as Nova Scotia teachers are embroiled in a contract dispute with the province and the government shut down schools Monday.

To get the free tickets, people must stop by the box offices at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro or Centre 200 in Sydney Tuesday to Friday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

There is a limit of one ticket per teacher and two per family.

The comedian has close ties to Nova Scotia. He studied physical education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish and Mr. D is shot in Halifax.

The Truro performance will take place Dec. 31, while the Sydney show will be April 14, 2017.
