'That is a monster': Giant gator spotted on Florida golf course

A group of golfers in Florida were enjoying an afternoon round when they got a terrifying surprise from giant alligator.

Charles Helms, 56, was on the third hole when he noticed the beast roaming through the Buffalo Creek Golf Course in Palmetto, Florida, News 3 reports.

He pulled out his phone and began recording.

“It is very common to see alligators on a Florida golf course and they’re typically not a threat to golfers,” Helms told Golf.com. “Wild alligators are shy and will not bother you unless you provoke it or corner it so it feels threatened.”

The alligator, thought to be about 15 to 16 feet long (about 4.5 metres long), slowly made its way through the golf course towards the lake, according to Golf.

Apparently, it’s not the first time the alligator made an appearance.

“He doesn’t bother anybody and they don’t bother him,” Wendy Schofield, an employee with Buffalo Creek Golf Course, told News 3. “He’s like a mascot for the course. He has been here for a very, very long time, he’s not new at all.”
