Giants call up Yastrzemski's grandson
The San Francisco Giants called up outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, before Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 28-year-old will make his major league debut after more than 700 games over six-plus seasons in the minors.
In a corresponding move, the Giants designated outfielder Mac Williamson for assignment. He batted .118 with one homer and seven RBIs in 15 games this season.
Yastrzemski is batting .316 with 12 homers, 25 RBIs and 38 runs in 40 games this season at Triple-A Sacramento.
He was in the Baltimore Orioles' farm system from 2013 through this March, when the Giants acquired him in a trade for right-hander Tyler Herb.
Carl Yastrzemski was an 18-time All-Star, three-time batting champion and the 1967 American League Most Valuable Player during a 23-year career with the Boston Red Sox (1961-83). "Yaz" was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989.
