Girl, 15, seriously injured in 'unusual' Torbay incident

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is looking for witnesses to an incident in Torbay involving a vehicle that put a 15-year-old girl in hospital with serious injuries Thursday night.

At 11:10 p.m., officers were called to what they're calling an "unusual incident" in the community.

It was reported that a girl was lying on Country Drive and there were a couple of cars stopped with their hazard lights flashing.

The 15-year-old was in hospital in serious but stable condition as of Friday afternoon.

The call came in to police about a possible motor vehicle collision. However, the details of how the girl was seriously injured aren't clear.

"It is unclear exactly what occurred but officers continue to interview people that were in the area at the time," the RNC said in a news release.

Marks made on the road by investigators show the incident happened near Whiteway Pond Road, which leads to a popular swimming spot in Torbay.

Area resident Bob Richard said the incident has left people in the area questioning what may have happened to the girl.

"Everybody's wondering what happened. Was it an accident? Was she struck? How did she get there?" he said.

Richard said sometime between 11 and 11:30 p.m. he heard raised voices, adding one female voice in particular was loud.

"You're kind of puzzled for a minute and wonder, should I be concerned about that?" Richard said.

"And then I said, 'Nah, sounds like normal activity sort of thing.' So, a little bit of raised voices but no screams or any screeching of tires kind of thing."

Accident and forensics investigators are trying to piece together what happened, but the cause hasn't been determined.

The RNC is looking for anyone who was in the area of Patrick's Path and Country Drive at the time to contact them.
