Police say a three-year-old girl died after she went missing in a conservation area south of Hamilton, Ont., Saturday.

The girl, Zahra Ousmane, was visiting Binbrook Conservation Area on Saturday with her family. She went missing at some point in the afternoon.

According to a police news release, the family contacted them at 6:18 p.m. The girl was found in the water by kayakers at around 7:50 p.m.

Police said she was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"Our thoughts are with the Ousmane family at this difficult time," police said in the release.

Police also said they do not believe the death is suspicious and are appealing to anyone who saw Ousmane or took video of the area between 5 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. to contact police.

They say they remain in the area and are investigating.
