Teen girl and her mother injured after assault in Scarborough highrise
A teen girl and her mother are seriously injured following an assault in a Scarborough highrise building on Friday evening.
Neighbours called 911 around 6 p.m. after they heard an attack inside an apartment in the area of Danforth and McCowan roads, near Lawrence Avenue East, Toronto police say.
Emergency crews found a 17-year-old girl without vital signs and with stab wounds to her upper body. She was rushed to SickKids hospital in life-threatening condition, according to paramedics.
"[Officers] got her down and ready for EMS, and it looks like that probably helped save her life at this point," Det. Jason Hillier of 43 Division told reporters at the scene.
The teen's mother believed to be in her early 30s was also taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with a head injury, police say. She is in serious, but non-life-threatening condition.
"It's been a pretty hectic scene because it was active," said Hillier.
Investigators are searching for a man, between age 35 and 40, around 5'9", wearing a white jacket and possibly without shoes.
He was last seen fleeing the area on foot north along McCowan Road near Trudelle Street.
Police say it's not immediately clear if the victims and suspect knew each other.
