Glen Powell Honors Bill Paxton in Tribute 'Twisters' Tweet
The much-anticipated Twisters movie is finally here! Amid premiere celebrations, Glen Powell took a moment to honor the actor—his late friend, Bill Paxton—who played a pivotal role in the original film.
As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton.
A great friend of mine who saw poetry in the natural world.
His boots are impossible to fill, but this life is all about chasing the greats.

“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Glen posted on X, formerly Twitter. “A great friend of mine who saw poetry in the natural world. His boots are impossible to fill, but this life is all about chasing the greats.”
Bill Paxton starred in the original 1996 film, Twister. He passed away in February 2017 following a stroke. His untimely death came after complications with a damaged coronary artery repair, which his family filed a wrongful death lawsuit for. During the trials and tribulations in the wake of his death, Bill’s family needed a light at the end of the tunnel and Twisters proved to be something of a cathartic release.
Bill’s son, James Paxton, took on a cameo role alongside Glen and the rest of the Twisters cast.
“I wanted to be a conduit for his spirit there and cheer everyone in this production on to success, because I know he would be,” James said of his cameo in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I wanted to do something that really honors his presence in this new chapter and really do something for him. And I realized there’s a lot of amazing people involved in this that I would love to get to know. So it ended up feeling like the right thing to do, to be representative of Dad there.”
Needless to say, X users were quick to share in celebrating the new film while honoring the original. “Class personified. It was thrilling to finally see Bill Paxton get the high-profile starting movie role he deserved in Twister. He’d been a beloved fixture in many movies before that. Also sounds like a guy named Glen Powell,” one fan commented on Glen’s tribute post. “The movie was great man, you guys did a fantastic job. Bill would be proud,” another fan wrote. “Love seeing an emerging artist give their flowers to other living legends,” someone else commented. “Beautiful tribute—from a meteorologist/stormchaser, you all did him and the whole crew proud,” yet another fan chimed in.
Twisters premiered in the U.S. on July 19, 2024. Since its release, the film has grossed $146 million worldwide.
