The Godfather premiered in 1972 to rave reviews, and quickly became the highest-grossing film ever made—a title it held until Jaws premiered four years later. Since then, it has come to be considered one of the most influential films of the last century, with the American Film Institute ranking it no. 2 on their list of greatest films in American cinema (second only to Citizen Kane).
The Godfather Part II—which serves as a sequel and a prequel—premiered two years later, and the third film in the trilogy, The Godfather Part III, premiered in 1990. In December 2020, a new edit of the third Godfather film was released under the title Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, which is 13 minutes shorter than the original film and reedited by Francis Ford Coppola himself.
