Golf betting: Bettors like Jordan Spieth in loaded Travelers field

Jordan Spieth’s odds are enticing for a plurality of bettors at BetMGM ahead of the Travelers Championship.

Spieth is drawing the most money of anyone in the field ahead of this weekend’s PGA Tour event. The three-time major winner won the Travelers in 2017 in a playoff over Daniel Berger and is at +2500 to win the tournament.

Spieth is getting nearly 14% of the money bet on the winner of the tournament at BetMGM. No other golfer is getting more than 10% of the handle; Patrick Cantlay (+1400) is getting the second-most money at 9.6%.

Co-favorite Scottie Scheffler is the only golfer getting more bets than Spieth. Scheffler is getting 7.4% of bets to win the tournament, just ahead of Spieth at 7.1%.

Scheffler (+1000) is tied with Rory McIlroy for the best odds to win the tournament. McIlroy opened at +900 to win but his odds have gotten slightly longer. McIlroy is getting 5.5% of bets but those bets make up just 4.2% of the handle.

Cantlay is the No. 4 favorite and also a favorite of sharps along with Spieth. Fewer than 5% of the bets to win the tournament are on Cantlay — he’s getting fewer bets than Seamus Power is at +5000. Power has gotten just over 5% of wagers to win the tournament.

Justin Thomas was the No. 3 favorite to win at +1200 before. he withdrew from the tournament on Wednesday morning. Before his WD, Thomas wasn't as much of a preferred choice of bettors as he usually is. He was getting 4.4% of the bets and 3.8% of the handle.

Thomas made sure to quell any possible LIV-related rumors as soon as he withdrew. He's been adamant in his support for the PGA Tour.

This weekend’s tournament features a lot of big names, likely thanks to its proximity to the U.S. Open. The Traveler’s is in Cromwell, Conn., and less than two hours away from The Country Club at Brookline where Matt Fitzpatrick got the first major of his career on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick is not in the field this weekend. If he was, he’d likely be among the favorites. Here is a brief look at those favorites at BetMGM.
