It came as no surprise that Pen15—you know, the show that stars two 30somethings as seventh graders alongside actual 13-year-olds—was renewed for a second season. And if it gets renewed for a third, it’ll be even less shocking than when you and your bestie decided to wear matching outfits for the umpteenth time in middle school. But technically, we don’t have any news about another season yet, so until then, let’s dissect all the signs that point to its renewal, shall we?

First, a refresher: The Hulu original was created by its stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle (and Sam Zvibleman), who play middle school versions of themselves—we’re talking braces, bowl cuts, and full-on awkwardness. It’s way too accurate (e.g., the experience of creating an AIM account or getting your first period), and reliving your own middle school memories through the show is almost too much, especially if you were part of that choker-filled, Limited Too era. And if you weren’t, it’s still relatable as hell.

Now, if you’ve already binged seasons 1 and 2, good news: We could get a third season…one day!

Please, tell me more!

Well, season 2 literally just hit Hulu on September 18. I feel your eagerness, but calm down for a sec. Considering we are in the middle of a chaotic, pandemic-ridden year, who knows when it will even be possible to film a third season? But the first season was released in February 2019, and the second season was confirmed in May 2019. If history repeats itself, we have a few months to await the news. Looking at other Hulu OG comedies, a third season of Shrill was announced two months after the second season hit the streaming platform. So if fans share their enthusiasm enough, the odds look good!

What could the next season be about?

Do you remember being in middle school? There’s so much to unpack here! In seasons 1 and 2, Maya and Anna are still in seventh grade—arguably the most awkward year in school. They cover masturbation, divorce, shaving, thongs, first kisses, and school dances. Maya has said that the show isn’t about the two characters growing up and going off to high school, so it’s likely a third season (and any seasons after) will show the characters navigating their way through that grade. Maybe more popular 2000s artifacts like Tamagotchis or Heelys will make an appearance. Season 2 dives deeper into sexual experimentation and harder issues like Anna’s parents’ divorce. Maybe season 3 will continue along that path into darker, R-rated things. We can only hope!

In the meantime, you can flip through your old yearbook, Facebook photos, or memories box (please tell me I’m not the only one who has one of these from my youth!) to get the same feeling you get while watching this show.
