Gousto has teamed up with Marmite for a series of new recipes and they’re delicious

It’s a topic that’s divided friends, family - even hemispheres - with battle lines drawn across kitchens and canteens everywhere: where do you stand on Marmite?

The iconic savoury spread has fans and enemies around the world, and thanks to its strong salty taste, there’s no sitting on the fence here. As the famous line goes, you either love it, or you hate it.

If you’re in the former camp, good news from Gousto. The recipe box company has a new set of seven limited edition recipes with Marmite’s umami flavours in the starring role - and they’re so good, they just might turn a few of the haters too.

While Marmite offers a selection of breakfast-based inspiration on its website, the upshot of Gousto’s recipes is that they deliver everything to your door, with all the ingredients pre-measured together with easy instruction cards to make sure the end result looks as good as it’s supposed to.

So, less time at the supermarket or rooting around for kitchen scales, and more time tucking into Marmite-enhanced meals for lunch or dinner.

New Gousto x Marmite recipes

Some dishes are topics of culinary controversy themselves; think ham and pineapple pizza finished with a Marmite-glaze, and teriyaki-style tofu while others are pure comfort food; Marmite Fried Chicken and Marmite Mushroom Carbonara.

The limited edition recipes are live on Gousto’s site from now until November 17. The full recipe range includes:

  • Marmite Pineapple Pizza

  • Marmite Cheese Pinwheels & Baked Potato Soup

  • Marmite Fried Chicken, Chips & Apple Slaw

  • Cheesy Marmite Spaghetti Meatballs

  • Marmite Teriyaki Popcorn Tofu & Sticky Rice

  • 10-Min Marmite & Peanut Butter Pork Udon

  • Marmite Mushroom Carbonara

Here’s what we thought of three:

Marmite Pineapple Pizza

Fruit on pizza - isn’t the world weird enough right now? Still, propelled by an open mind and an empty stomach, I set about slicing pineapple rings and mixing in a single serving pot of the good stuff.

Marmite is as thick and slow as treacle, so I had my misgivings about how well it would glaze the pineapple chunks, but the fruit's juice seemed to mix everything well together. After whipping up a quick tomato sauce base and shredding the bacon and mozzarella onto the pre-made pizza bases, I slung everything in the oven. The pizza turned out well, the sweetness of the pineapple balanced by the Marmite. Pretty tasty.

Marmite Teriyaki Popcorn Tofu & Sticky Rice

The best picture on the recipe card, I had high hopes for this dish - even though I’ve never tried tofu before. It looks inoffensive enough. Everything came together fairly quickly; in fact, cooking the rice was the longest part, which should give you an indicator of how fast it was. Although it looked the part when I plated up, I think I burnt the Marmite Teriyaki glaze so I ended up with fairly bitter cubes of tofu. That said, the sauce smelt amazing before I ruined things, so I would give it another go - maybe with chicken, next time.

Marmite Mushroom Carbonara

Carbs and cold weather are a match made in heaven, so I was interested to see how Marmite could elevate a classic carbonara. Gousto calls for the yeast spread to be used as a glaze on roasted oyster and chestnut mushrooms, which added a delightful savoury kick to the creamy sauce.
