Grab Your Wallet – A Key Win Just Made '1917' The Oscars Frontrunner For Best Picture
After winning at this year's Producers Guild Awards, Sam Mendes's one-shot World War One drama, 1917, looks almost unbeatable at the Oscars next week.
On Saturday (January 18), the film received the Darryl F Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, turning into a new Oscar favourite at the upcoming 2020 Academy Awards.
The PGAs are often seen as a bellwether for the Oscars, as they have predicted the Academy Awards' Best Picture winner 21 times in its 30-year history.
Most recently, the PGA Awards correctly predicted Green Book's Oscar win last year, as well as The Shape of Water's triumph in 2018. However, in 2017 the PGA prize was awarded to La La Land, while the Oscar went to Moonlight (after that envelope mix-up, you could say that the PGA got it half-right).
This awards season, 1917 has already won Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes, with Sam Mendes, also scooping the Globe for Best Director.
The war movie follows two British soldiers – Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones star Dean-Charles Chapman) – who must cross into enemy territory in order to deliver a message that could save the lives of hundreds of their fellow comrades.
In terms of its competition for Best Picture, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese's mob epic The Irishman and Bong Joon Ho's Korean-language satire Parasite remain its closest rivals, but it's looking increasingly unlikely that anything will pip 1917 to the top award.
