Grand River and St. Mary's hospital plan to merge April 1, 2025
The two hospitals in Kitchener are one step closer to officially merging.
St. Mary's and Grand River Hospitals in Kitchener have filed a integration business case report with the Ontario Ministry of Health. The report, if approved by the province, will officially merge the hospital boards on April 1, 2025.
Discussions between the two hospitals formally began in April of this year to look at what a combined hospital would mean for the operations of each location. That included looking at finances and any potential risks.
"This is an important and historic milestone in our journey of bringing our two hospitals together to form one new organization," stated a joint news release on Thursday.
"We firmly believe that voluntary integration will provide our communities with faster, more modern, improved access to fully integrated, high-quality, efficient care as we leverage our combined strengths, together."
The hospitals currently have other joint collaborations, including shared clinical support services and a shared information system.
The hospitals received input from staff, physicians and patients along with members of the community, partners and funders to shape the plan.
Officials from both hospitals say the current sites will remain operational as hospitals for the next decade until the new hospital opens in 2034.
