Grandma with stage 4 cancer receives surprise of her life

Madeline “Maddie” Smith’s grandmother, Frances Jones, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer just weeks before Christmas. The diagnoses was particularly painful since Frances’s husband passed away a few years ago.

So Smith decided to do something special to help her grandma get through chemotherapy treatment — she sewed one of her grandfather’s old shirts into a blanket and gave it to her as a gift.

“I wanted to find some way to create a gift that she could bring with her to her treatments that made her feel like my grandpa was with her when the idea of the blanket popped in my head,” Smith told Little Things. “They had a remarkable love. He proposed on their second date and were married for 56 years when he passed about four years ago.”

With this special blanket, Frances’s husband can essentially be with her — even during her chemo treatment. When Frances opened the gift on Christmas day, she broke down in tears of joy.

“Thank you,” grandma Frances said between tears. According to Smith, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

“Put a lot of blood sweat and tears into making this for my grandma (mainly blood bc sewing) but her reaction was worth it all,” Smith wrote in her heartfelt post. “Not a dry eye in the house. Although it never gets easier to not have my grandpa with us anymore, I hope she can find strength being “wrapped in his arms”. I love you mawmaw.”

The comments were overwhelmingly positive, and reminded readers to treasure the ones closest to them:

“That is the sweetest thing! Not a dry eye in my house now,” wrote Christi.

“Best present ever!!! Couldn’t watch it without tearing up,” Erica commented.
