A grandfather in Puerto Rico managed to hide another family from his wife, who didn’t approve the idea of them in the first place. That family happened to be of the feline variety.

The 85-year-old man, named Jimmy, had taken to a stray cat, which would frequently visit his neighbourhood. However, his wife forbade the furry critter from coming near the house, so Jimmy kept the cat behind her back. Or rather, her backyard.

“My grandpa felt for the stray cats and would leave food in the back of the house near his tool shed, a spot where my grandma doesn’t go,” Jimmy’s granddaughter Syl told the Dodo. “This particular cat was especially friendly and got attached to my grandpa.”

Turns out the stray cat was pregnant. Rather than turn her away, Jimmy accommodated to her delicate state by tending to her needs. When she gave birth, he fed the feline family and cared for them in his shed. Grandma didn’t learn about Jimmy’s secret brood until three weeks after the litter was born. Thankfully, grandma got on board but only under one condition.

“She’s OK with them staying there until they’re old enough to have new homes,” says Syl.
