Guardians of the Galaxy 3: James Gunn says that killed off character will stay dead

One character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will definitely not be returning in any future films.

Despite the introduction of different timelines as part of the multiverse, which essentially makes anything possible, director James Gunn has doubled down on his decision to kill off one of his Guardians of the Galaxy characters.

In the 2016 sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, the character of Yondu Udonta – memorably played by Michael Rooker – is killed off in an act of heroism as he saves the life of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).

Gunn's comments came after he revealed on Twitter that DC gave him “carte blanche” to do what he wanted in his forthcoming Suicide Squad film, and that no character was safe in his eyes.

“But yet, you know you would have a lot of angry fans if you kill off popular characters,” a tweeter replied, to which Gunn stated: “There are angry fans no matter what choice you make. I still get hate messages for Yondu dying in #GotGVol2.”

When another person responded with the theory that Yondu will be resurrected in a future film, Gunn stepped in to debunk this idea.

“I get sometimes you can bring back characters in a cool way,” he wrote, adding: “But usually, if a character dies, & it's a meaningful part of the story, the character should stay dead. So unless it's a flashback, Yondu will stay dead, as far as I'm concerned. Otherwise, it ruins his sacrifice.”

He doubled down on this in a later tweet, writing: “As long as I have the power, Yondu will stay dead. I don’t want to cheapen moments like these.”

Gunn will return to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, but before that, he will release The Suicide Squad in 2021.
