Guevera Wilson Clorina gets life with 35-year minimum

Guevera Wilson Clorina has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 35 years.

Clorina had pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his cousin's wife, Chona Manzano, and their five-year-old son Gabrial two years ago.

Manzano's husband had sponsored Clorina to come to Canada.

Carla MacPhail, one of the lawyers prosecuting the case, says the 35-year sentence is unique here.

"The law in Canada now allows a judge to consider imposing consecutive parole ineligibility periods for people who have committed multiple murder," she said. "And it's the first time that the law has been applied and used in Calgary."

Clorina also pleaded guilty to sexual touching of a minor in connection with a three-year relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

Court documents show Manzano may have learned about the inappropriate relationship before her death.
