  • Gwyneth Paltrow has fully opened up on her former marriage to Chris Martin.

  • The actress says the pair ‘never settled into being a couple’ despite a decade of marriage.

  • She's now happily married to producer Brad Falchuk since their split in 2014.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's marriage breakdown - or should we say "conscious uncoupling" - made headlines back in 2014.

And now, the 47-year-old actress has admitted the two "never settled into being a couple" despite being married for over a decade. Erm, what?

Since splitting, the pair have remained on good terms as they co-parent their children - Apple, 16, and Moses, 14.

Speaking to British Vogue, the Oscar winner explained: "We were close, though we had never fully settled into being a couple. We just didn't quite fit together. There was always a bit of unease and unrest. But man, did we love our children."

Despite their issues, the pair had "always been good friends."

"We laughed at the same things, shared a funny bones humour, impressions, utter silliness. We were moved by the same qualities in music: beautiful chords, innovation, harmonies," the star added.

Gwyneth even went on to reveal exactly what she thinks of their infamous "conscious uncoupling" term... six years on.

The mum-of-two shared: "I had never heard of the phrase 'conscious uncoupling'. Frankly, the term sounded a bit full of itself, painfully progressive and hard to swallow.

"It was an idea introduced to us by our therapist, the man who helped us architect our new future. I was intrigued, less by the phrase, but by the sentiment."

Unlike many Hollywood romances, Gwyneth and Chris are pretty cordial still.

Last year, the star revealed why she gets on with her ex-husband so well - admitting she'd rather have a positive relationship than a negative one.

"We were separated for a year before we announced we were separated. We kept it very quiet, and in that time I asked adult friends with divorced parents what they remembered," she told ES magazine.

"There was this resounding theme – 'It was really hard because for the first two years my parents didn't speak.' 'It was awful for a while,' or 'My parents hated each other.' And I thought, 'I would really love to skip that part.' Those kids felt they were constantly betraying one parent by being with the other."

Gwyneth also said she doesn't believe divorce has to be "devastating" either.

"It doesn't have to be the end of your relationship with somebody. I think Chris and I were meant to be together and have our kids," she said. "But our relationship is much better like this: friends and co-parents and family."

In fact, the actress has even went on to forge a blossoming friendship with Chris' new girlfriend Dakota Johnson.

Meanwhile, Gwyneth's husband Brad gets on well with Chris. The internet went crazy when the Shakespeare in Love star uploaded a snap of them together in 2017, alongside the caption: "Sunday brunch #modernfamily."

Kinda cool, right?
