Hannah Einbinder's mom Laraine Newman has some choice words about The Bear's comedy nominations at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Shortly after The Bear's Liza Colón-Zayas won the best supporting actress in a comedy series — a category for which Newman's daughter was also nominated, for Hacks — the Saturday Night Live alum shared a short but strong statement about the FX series being included in this year's comedy category.

"F---. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she tweeted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The Bear – which stars Jeremy Allen WhiteAyo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – led television's biggest night with 23 Emmy nominations, breaking the record for most nominations for a comedy, originally set by NBC’s 30 Rock in 2009 with 22 nominations.

Critics and fans alike have raised questions about whether or not the FX series could really be considered a comedy, or if the show would be a better fit as a drama due to its sometimes dark subject nature.

Questions about The Bear’s category were also brought up during the 2023 Emmy Awards as well, when the show earned 10 awards including outstanding comedy series and outstanding supporting actress.

According to the Emmy nomination rules, producers are able to select which category a show can be nominated in, but must receive final approvals from the “Academy’s Industry Panel.”

The rules also state that for a show to be considered a comedy, “the majority of a [show’s] time” must be “primarily comedic” for at least six episodes in a season. Once a show is entered into a specific category, “all entries must follow the specific categorization of a show.”

Meaning if a show is entered as a comedy, all the awards — acting and directing, for example — need to be within the comedy series category.

This year's Emmys host, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy also poked fun at the series being nominated in the comedy category during their opening monologue.

"I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is really a comedy," Eugene joked. "But in the true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes"

On Sept. 15, Colón-Zayas won the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series, her first Emmy win ever. She was opposite Einbinder, Carol Burnett (Palm Royale) and Abbott Elementary's Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

In her acceptance speech, she said, in part, "How could I have thought it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle and Sheryl Lee Ralph. I love you all, I revere you to the bottom of my heart."
