Halifax council to consider comparing their salaries to the average Nova Scotian

Halifax regional council will consider a new formula for their own salary increases that looks to what Nova Scotians are making, instead of other municipalities across the country.

The review formula is currently based on what the salaries are in a number of similarly sized municipalities. But a new report suggests using average industrial earnings in Nova Scotia.

If the average amount declines, then councillors' salaries would be frozen.

Deputy Mayor Steve Craig is pleased with the approach.

"The whole idea for me was to have something that was reflective of the economy in the Halifax Regional Municipality area, and that's what this does," he said.

The report is on the agenda of Tuesday's council meeting.

Councillors will also discuss if a transition allowance should be created for members of council who do not re-offer or are not re-elected — one month per year of service, to a maximum of three months.

That would require permission from the province.
